90s R&B group TLC is back and enlisting the help of their fans through a Kickstarter campaign to make their final album a reality.
TLC, which currently consists of Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, hasn’t released an album since 3D came out 13 years ago, seven months after the death of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in 2002. In order to make this last album happen, they’ve set a fundraising goal of $150,000 by February 15. It doesn’t seem like that will be an issue though, considering a little over two thirds of the needed funds have already been pledged since the campaign was announced on Monday via twitter.
If you head over to the Kickstarter page, it does a pretty good job of answering any questions one could have. For example, maybe you’re questioning why they need to fundraise money since they are celebrities and their particular group has tons of success between having over 65 million records sold worldwide, four multiplatinum albums, and ten top 10 singles, as noted in the video of the page.
“While major labels offer artists multimillion dollar recording and marketing budgets, they don’t often give artists complete control of their own music. It is ESSENTIAL that we create our final album completely on our own terms, without any restrictions, with YOU,” the group says.
Or maybe you want to know what they’re planning on doing with those funds once they have them: “The initial goal of $150,000 will go towards a writing session in the studio with a producer and engineer. The money beyond that will go to booking music producers, writing sessions, mixing sessions, recording sessions, and SO much more,” according to TLC’s Kickstarter page.
Those who decide to help out and back the project get rewarded in more ways than one. In addition to playing your part in making TLC’s final album possible, there is quite the variety of rewards to thank you for your support. Every single backer that pledges $5 or more gets a chance to vote on which TLC track will be remixed and included on the album. And that’s just the very tip of the iceberg.
There’s also digital copies of the album, personal calls from the group, VIP tickets for their upcoming tour, and a listening party in LA up for grabs – just to name a few things. The ultimate prize? For a pledge of $7,500 or more, you can earn yourself a professional photo shoot with TLC, as well as most of the prizes that come before that. Believe it or not, one person has already dished out the money to claim this prize, leaving only 4 more people the opportunity to do so.
